Chautauqua 2025 Travel Course - Ancient Wales

Megalithic Archaeology of Wales, Avebury, and Stonehenge

A journey through the megaliths of ancient Wales. This one-week travel program includes nineteen archaeological sites, five museums, and three evening lectures. Overnights in Liverpool, Holy Head, Caernarfon, Swansea, Salisbury, and London.

Trefignath
Participants will fly in to and out of London, making their way to Liverpool by train or plane to the first hotel in time for an evening meet and greet. Days 2 and 3 will be spent exploring the megaliths of Anglesey and Holy Head Island. Then the tour will head south along the western coastline of Wales, traveling to four major megalithic arrangements.

Pentre Ifan
Day 5 and 6 will be based in Swansea. First, participants will explore the Gower, a small peninsula with Neolithic age burial chambers. Next, up north of Swansea where several single stone monoliths, or menhirs, still stand in lonely fields. Day 6 will visit more chambered megalithic tombs on the way to Cardiff, where the group will get lunch and a private tour the National Museum of Wales.

Stonehenge
The last days of the journey will take its pilgrims out of Wales to the world’s most famous henges – Avebury and Stonehenge. Avebury and its museum on the first day, and a private tour inside Stonehenge just after dawn on the next. The adventure will conclude back in London with a visit to the British Museum’s Neolithic collections and a happy hour course closing celebration in the bar of the final hotel. Participants will either fly out the next day or continue in London on their own.

Day trips will involve walking in cold and windy weather. Yes, even in July. While it will not be physically challenging, participants in weak physical condition are encouraged to build strength and stamina before the trip.

Participants are responsible for arranging their own flight reservations to and from London, and from there to Liverpool to meet the tour group. Since participants come from all over the country, recommending a single flight is impossible.
