Chautauqua 2025 Travel Course - Ancient Greece

An Expedition Through the Cities of Ancient Greece

A time traveling adventure to ancient Greece! This one-week travel program will visit seven archaeological sites, five museums, and includes three evening lectures. Overnights in Athens, Delphi, Olympia, and Sparta.

Parthenon
Participants will fly in to and out of Athens, arriving to the first hotel in time for an evening meet and greet. Day 2 will stay in Athens, visiting the Parthenon, the Acropolis, and its amazing new museum.

Delphi
Day 3 begins the road trip. The group will explore the city of Thebes (now Thiva) and spend the night in Delphi. The next morning they’ll visit the famous home of the oracle and then head to Peloponnesus. Two nights in Olympia, visiting the ruins of the ancient game grounds and two museums dedicated to ancient Greek technology.

TombAg
Next, the ruins of Messene and an overnight in famous Sparta. The final tour day will start with Mycenae and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Lunch in Argos will be followed by an exploration of ancient Corinth. The adventure will conclude on the evening of June 13, with a happy hour course closing celebration back in Athens. Participants will either fly out the next day or continue exploring Greece on their own.

For people with an interest in...

History, architecture, archaeology, anthropology, archaeoastronomy, sociology, and other related science and social sciences fields.

Prerequisites

While not required, participants are encouraged to have at least some knowledge of the history of ancient Greece.  Dr. Ed Barnhart can recommend readings for those interested in learning more before the trip. Day trips will involve walking in hot and humid weather. While it will not be physically challenging, participants in weak physical condition are encouraged to build strength and stamina before the trip.

Costs
$3600 per person (two people sharing a hotel room)
$4200 per person for your own single hotel room

50% balance due 90 days before the course (March 7)

Flights
Participants are responsible for arranging their own flight reservations to and from Athens. Since participants come from all over the country, recommending a single flight is impossible.
