Chautauqua 2023 - Ancient Peruvian Pyramids
5000 Years of Pyramids in Northern Coastal Peru
The northern coastal valleys of Peru contain some of the oldest pyramids built on Earth. Beginning before 3000 BCE, mutliple civilizations rose and fell in those valleys until the arrival of the Europeans in the 16th century. This 10 day travel course will visit many of them, some in quite remote places.
Participants will fly into Lima, Peru. After a first day of visiting a museum and an urban pyramid, their exploration of the coast will begin with a journey to Aspero and Caral. Then over the next few days they'll climb up into the Andes to explore Chavin de Huantar, long considered Peru's "mother culture".
Returning to the coast, an overnight in the Casama Valley will allow the group to visit ancient Sechin and the astronomical towers of Chankillo. Further north from Trujillo, tours of Huaca de la Luna and Chan Chan will introduce them to their first Moche and Chimu cities. On the road yet further north, thery'll stop into Huaca del Brujo and what is currently known as the world's oldest pyramid - Huaca de Prieta.
The final days of the course will be spent in Chiclayo. From there, the pyramids of Sipan, Tucume, and Batan Grande are all within an hour's drive. After a final morning's visit to the museum of all the golden treasures from the tombs of Sipan, the group will head to the Chiclayo airport and back to Lima. Flights out that evening, or continuing the adventure on their own.

Flights
Participants are responsible for arranging their own flight reservations to and from Lima, and a one-way flight from Chiclayo back to Lima. Since participants come from all over the country, recommending a single flight is impossible. The options are many for this trip. As of November 2022, round trip flights from Miami to Lima are running below $500. Departures from other cities add a few hundred to that. The one-way from Chiclayo to Lima on LATAM Airlines is under $100. Of course, the airline industry is dependent on the market and fees are subject to change.
